Sex, drugs and Newt Gingrich

A couple of Newtacular quotes (via Slog)

As Speaker of the House, Gingrich introduced the “Drug Importer Death Penalty Act of 1996.”…It would have applied to anyone convicted more than once of carrying 100 doses — or about two ounces — or marijuana across the border. Defendants would have had a window of 18 months to file their one and only appeal…[Gingrich said,] “I have made the decision that I love our children enough that we will kill you if you do this.”

But when it was pointed out that he admitted smoking pot in college, he said this:

“See, when I smoked pot it was illegal, but not immoral,” Gingrich reportedly told Wall Street Journal reporter Hilary Stout in 1996. “Now, it is illegal AND immoral. The law didn’t change, only the morality… That’s why you get to go to jail and I don’t.”

And since the serial adulterer is talking about morality, he’s planning to con the family values crowd with this:

On Monday, the Family Leader released a response by Mr. Gingrich, who gave what he called a solemn vow “to defend and strengthen the family.”

“I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification,” Mr. Gingrich wrote. “I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.”

He also said he would “uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.”

Here’s a campaign slogan that’s perfect for this guy:

There’s a sucker born every minute.”
