All right, I’ve had it. What is wrong with these people?
From the start of the 2012 presidential race, the most consistent — and popular — criticism of President Obama by the GOP candidates has not been on the economy, health care or foreign policy. It’s been on the incumbent’s use of a TelePrompter.
Are they so stupid that they think past presidents, including their hero Ronald Reagan, didn’t use a TelePrompter? Here’s a Mark Knoller piece with CBS from 2009:
There’s one reason above all others that President Obama uses a teleprompter in delivering most of his speeches: he’s good at it.
Ronald Reagan was the same way. He was more at ease in reading his speech off the dual screens of a teleprompter than looking up and down at a speech text on his lectern
Not so, George W. Bush. He often got that nervous, deer-in-the-headlights look when giving an address from a teleprompter. He would seem stiff and ill-at-ease. He did not convey a sense of understanding.
Here’s President Deer-in-the-Headlights with a TelePrompter at a State of the Union address:
Here’s President Bill “Hide the Interns (part 2)” Clinton with a TelePrompter:
Here’s President George Bush the Smarter with a TelePrompter:
Here’s St. Ronnie of the GOP with TWO TelePrompters:
Here’s President Jimmy “Mr. Peanut” Carter with a TelePrompter:
Gerald “Help Me, I’m Falling” Ford used one. According to SodaHead.com.
In fact, his teleprompter frequently contained cues telling him what physical actions to use along with the words!
I’ve just gone back more than 30 years. The TelePrompter was invented in the 1950s. Every president has used the TelePrompter since its invention with the exception of Richard Nixon. And those of us who were around then know what a charming speaker he was.
Oh, you don’t believe me?
Here’s Lyndon “Lift Your Dog by the Ears” Johnson with a TelePrompter:
Here’s John “Hide the Intern (part 1)” Kennedy with a TelePrompter:
Here’s Dwight “He Gave You Nixon” Eisenhower with a Teleprompter:
Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first president to use them but he was not a fan either, grousing about having to “use that damn teleprompter.”
So SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP about Obama using a TelePrompter. Republicans aren’t mad because he uses a TelePrompter. They’re mad because he uses it well!
