The silence on the Spokane bomb

For what it’s worth, this story is a hell of a lot bigger than the play it’s been getting.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A backpack found along the route of the Martin Luther King Jr. march in Spokane contained a bomb “capable of inflicting multiple casualties,” the FBI said Tuesday, describing the case as “domestic terrorism.”

The FBI said the Swiss Army-brand backpack was found about 9:25 a.m. PST on Monday on a bench at the northeast corner of North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in downtown Spokane.

In an interview on msnbc cable’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Spokesman-Review reporter Thomas Clouse said confidential sources told him that the device was equipped with a remote control detonator and contained shrapnel.

Someone put a bomb on the route for the MLK Day parade. The target was people who were going to participate in the celebration of the slain civil-rights leader, most likely minorities. It was going to be detonated. There were no warnings.

This is the epitome of domestic terrorism.

This is the stuff we’re not supposed to accuse the right wing of promoting. We’re too busy arguing whether violent rhetoric is bad, but to actually state the obvious on this averted attack is going to be taken by the radical right as another attempt to take away their free speech. And their guns. And their arsenals.

Do we have to wait for another attack to happen to face up to the real terrorist threat in this country?
