Santorum is the new GOP frontrunner

How is this possible?

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum hasn’t led a national poll all year, but now that we’re eight states into the primary (in which Santorum has won the majority of delegates in three of them) he’s finally done in it. Public Policy Polling (D) released their national GOP numbers showing Santorum in first with a huge 15 point lead, besting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 38 – 23. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, fading in national polling, falls to 17 percent while Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) gets 13.

It gets worse:

The best thing Romney might have going for him right now is Gingrich’s continued presence in the race. If Gingrich dropped out 58% of his supporters say they would move to Santorum, while 22% would go to Romney and 17% to Paul. Santorum gets to 50% in the Newt free field to 28% for Romney and 15% for Paul.

Santorum’s whole campaign has been about religion and sexual repression (with a bit of dumping on minorities thrown in). And unlike the remainder of the current GOP field, there’s a sense that he doesn’t say these things because that will get him votes. He says them because he actually believes in what he’s saying.

There are countries where the leadership holds identical beliefs. Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia come to mind. These are theocracies where nothing is more important than religion. Recently in Saudi Arabia, a blogger insulted the prophet Mohammed. That blogger fled the country because people were calling for his death. Not just ordinary people. People in government, like this guy:

The sheik is pleading to the king that the blogger, who fled to Malaysia, be arrested and executed for saying he wouldn’t pray for Mohammed on his birthday. He wants the guy dead so much, he breaks into tears.

The blogger has been arrested in Malaysia on behalf of the Saudi government. The penalty for what he did is death.

This is what happens in theocracies. And now we’re seeing that a large segment of the American population doesn’t have a problem with theocratic rule. They make up a significant portion of the Republican base. And they’re rallying for Rick Santorum.

God, help us.
